Business Development

The Business Development portfolio currently focuses on two main areas that directly impact the CAPL membership.

  • The first area of Government and Regulatory Liaison insures that the CAPL is represented on committees that deal with mineral rights issues. The Alberta Department of Energy has been progressing initiatives such as Interactive Sale Mapping, and the Freehold Mineral Tax project. In addition, Alberta Department of Energy is also moving ahead with plans to develop a policy and regulatory framework to support Shallow Rights Reversion as well as Carbon Capture and Sequestration. While there has been a lot of focus on the Alberta Industry Advisory Committee, there has been increasing interest in having active Industry Advisory Committees for Saskatchewan. The revamping of the Saskatchewan ISC also has significant input from CAPL members. Work is progressing with British Columbia to establish an Industry Advisory Committee that will work cooperatively to implement revisions to BC’s P&NG tenure system. This portfolio is also responsible, jointly with CAPLA, for presenting the annual P&NG Information Exchange which updates industry on developments in the various provinces in which we are operating. CAPL is also well represented on the C2C ADR Council.

  • The second area of Standard Agreements and Forms is the foundation of the documentation used in the industry. Various committees continue to review these standardized documents to insure that they meet the needs of our changing industry. With the introduction of the 2007 CAPL Operating Procedure last year, committees are also currently looking at Independent Operations Notices and the Freehold Petroleum and Natural Gas Lease. Our committee volunteers are vital to this review and revision process and they appreciate any input that members can provide on the standardized forms.

A potential new area for this portfolio will be a committee to support Unconventional Resources. As the industry moves to exploration and development of unconventional plays, we believe there is a need for a group that can support those members that are actively involved in unconventional resources such as natural gas from coals, tight sands and shales.

Participation by additional volunteers on any of these committees is always encouraged and welcomed. Please contact me for further information on any existing committees, if you wish to discuss other initiatives you believe the CAPL should be involved with or if you wish to discuss any other related issues.
